Welch Ranch Recreation Area is an exceptionally unique and beautiful location to explore. Visitors are encouraged to take on the challenge of camping in this pristine area, while at the same time practicing Leave No Trace principles. The area is closed for motorized use and target shooting activities, but dispersed camping is allowed. Visitors should arrive prepared with all necessary supplies, as no bathrooms, garbage collection, or potable water are available.
To reach the Welch Ranch from Interstate 90, take Exit 339 and head east. After crossing the railroad tracks, visitors should turn left (north) onto WY 338 and travel for about 5.5 miles. Parking is available at two locations: the first parking area is located on the left just before the Tongue River and the second parking area is located on the right just after the river. The Brinton Ranch house, a majestic structure originally constructed in 1892, was thoughtfully expanded in 1927-28 to proudly showcase the Brinton family’s impressive collections of Indian artifacts, art, historical documents, books, and over 600 oils, watercolors, and sketches by renowned American artists such as Audobon, Borein, Gollings, Kleiber, Remington, and Russell.
