Navigating the picturesque terrain of the Wild Horse Basin and Sierra Madre Range a tightknit crew identified an incredible opportunity for exploration while film-recording an adventure along the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route. With the perfect weather, navigable course, and clear night sky they grandly acted on their determination that ultimately pushed them further and further beyond expectation. On their path to success they were tested with increasingly difficult riding elements such as a muddy puddle, optional water crossings, and rows of uneven cement pavers

Exploring the Wyoming Backcountry

The Wild Horse Basin and the Sierra Madre Range, with its sweeping turns, compact dirt, rolling hills and rocky terrain, provided an incredible backdrop for the filming expedition of the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route. As the day progressed, the views became more stunning and the challenge more technical, but the perfect riding weather and clear night sky made it all worth it. With a multitude of stars shining brightly above, the crew went to bed looking forward to the next big adventure.

Paul Guillien Sets the Tone

Paul Guillien, the president of the group, confidently went first to prove that it was possible. He skillfully maneuvered around the muddy puddle and demonstrated to the rest of the group that they could do it too. A few individuals opted for an alternate route, but the majority remained determined and successfully crossed the obstacle. It was clear that this feat set the tone for the remainder of the day, as the challenges became increasingly difficult. Later on, the group encountered an optional water crossing with uneven rows of cement pavers, however, they were lucky enough that the riverbed wasn’t too deep. In the end, the group gained confidence in their abilities and emerged from the experience feeling proud.

Overlook Tower at Kennaday Peak (10,810 ft.)

The crew later that afternoon decided to check out the overlook tower at Kennaday Peak (10,810 ft.), a route which was technical with ruts and big, loose rocks. As they climbed higher, they emerged above the tree line and could see for miles. The remarkable views only grew as they made their way up the switchbacks of sandy terrain. At the flat area, riders were able to park and take in the 360-degree views. With the intense riding and relentless terrain, the crew had to be careful to stay hydrated. Thankfully, one of the members had hydration tablets on hand, and within minutes they were ready to carry on with their journey.

Taking an Alternate Route

On Day Three, Jocelin Snow and the rider tackled the Shirley Mountains with confidence, their training paying off as they navigated steep ascents and descents, sand, rocks, ruts, washboards and other obstacles. Though there were plenty of challenges, they managed to keep the bike upright throughout the course. When they arrived at the Beaver Rim, they faced even more sand, big rocks and deep ruts. Despite a few missteps, they eventually chose to break off and take an alternate route that followed huge rock formations, leading them past dozens of cattle grazing in the fields. This alternative path was the perfect choice for those not wanting to ride the length of the Beaver Rim.

From there, Jocelin Snow and the rider traveled to South Pass City, a ghost town with plenty of history. After panning for gold in the river, they stopped by the restored homes and saloons to get a glimpse into the past. The day ended with a descent down sweeping switchbacks that took them to Sinks Canyon State Park, where the Popo Agie River disappears underground before reappearing in a calm pool full of hungry trout.

Exploring the Bighorn National Forest

Subheading: Experiencing the Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site and Paintrock Lodge

Explorers were incredibly proud of themselves after conquering the track through the Bighorn National Forest. Surrounded by stunning views, they navigated loose switchbacks, bumpy washboards, and a cow pasture with jumpable whoops, ruts, loose dirt and gravel. Making sure to stop at the Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site for a lunch break as well as learn some fascinating history, they reached the breathtaking Medicine Lodge Lake where they enjoyed a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters and watched the sun set in all its glory. Their plans were to camp by the lake, but a few decided to take advantage of the Paintrock Lodge’s amenities and stay there instead, leaving the rest to enjoy camping.

Mani’s Selfless Dedication and Courage

Despite the unfortunate incident, Mani was undeterred and continued to be the rock of the expedition. That morning, he had already prepared a delicious “roadside taco” meal for the team as they waited for the rest of their group to arrive. When they did, they were met with bad news: one of the members had taken a fall and injured his wrist. Mani quickly leapt into action, organizing who would take the abandoned bike and driving the injured rider to a hospital in Sheridan, WY. His selfless dedication and courage helped the team overcome this difficult situation.

A Fitting End to an Unforgettable Experience

The final morning of the adventure was like a fairytale. The Bear Lodge Resort at Burgess Junction, Wyoming was alive with beauty and wonder; a majestic moose and its calf grazed on the brush outside the window, while inside, a group of strangers bonded over a farewell breakfast. This incredible journey had taken them to some of the most awe-inspiring parts of Wyoming and allowed them to witness true teamwork and sheer grit as the film crew worked hard to document it all. It was a fitting end to an unforgettable experience.
