Honoring Lost Loved Ones with the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Powwow

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Powwow is returning for its third year this Thursday, proudly hosted by Tongue River High School students. This year’s event will feature special guests Christian Wassana and Moses Brings Plenty, Indigenous actors with a passion for helping the community. The event also doubles as a fundraiser for scholarships for Indigenous students of TRHS and Big Horn High School. Isabella Yellowtail, TRHS senior, founded the event her sophomore year to honor the memory of a lost loved one.

Her initiative was met with immense enthusiasm from the TRHS staff and student body, each of whom jumped on board to ensure its success. Principal Colby Lynch praised Yellowtail’s efforts, declaring that it was an amazing feat for a student to come up with such an idea and lead it to fruition.

The Powwow will feature a Tiny Tots Special, a Push Dance Special hosted by Yellowtail in memory of her late brother, and appearances by Yellowstone actors Christian Wassana and Moses Brings Plenty. Moreover, it is also a fundraiser for scholarships for Indigenous students of TRHS and BHHS. With much to see and do, the MMIP Powwow looks to be an incredible event that Yellowtail can be proud of.

Last year’s event raised $900 after costs, and the MMIP Powwow has $15,000 in the bank plus more from sponsors. This is a testament to the generous support from the community, whether it be citizens or local businesses, who have come together to recognize and appreciate the hard work of the students for such a worthy cause.

This Thursday, come join the MMIP Powwow in the TRHS gymnasium from 6-9 p.m. to witness the inspiring commitment of these students and find out who will be taking over the torch from Yellowtail. It is a free event and your donations are welcomed!

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Powwow, led by its grassroots founder Isabella Yellowtail, has inspired many and helped bring much-needed awareness to the endemic struggle of minoritized peoples. The initative comes from personal pain and brings forth joyful cultural exchange with each returning year. With its student ambassadors, special guests Christian Wassana and Moses Brings Plenty, and its goal of motivating high school youth to pursue their educational dreams, the MMIP Powwow looks to be everything that Isabella Yellowtail and her community had hoped for: A unique event overflowing with opportunity and celebration.
